Fall Facts on FSU

Fall is harvest time. Here are a few agricultural facts.
  • Some of the areas with the best soil - southeastern Russia, western Siberia and Kazakhstan, are at the highest risk of drought and wind erosion.
  • Only in Kransnodor (southern Russia, just north east of the Black Sea) and parts of the Ukraine are the agricultural conditions comparable to America’s Midwest.
  • Much of the Ukraine and Moldavia are covered with fertile chernozem or "black earth". This plus a less extreme climate and a better pattern of rainfall allow intensive crop cultivation.
  • The cool, wet summers and sandy soil of Byelorussia is ideal for growing potatoes
  • Over 90% of the former Soviet Union’s tea is produced in Georgia with the help of irrigation
  • The population of Moldavia is primarily involved in agriculture - growing fruit, vegetables, nuts, maize, winter wheat, sunflowers and wine grapes
  • The southern part of Russia is suitable for growing flax, potatoes, sugar beets, wheat millet and sunflowers.
