FRUA INC NATIONAL CHAIR ANNOUNCEMENT

Dear FRUA Members,

At the beginning of this year, Sue Gainor went on sabbatical from her role as National Chair of Families for Russian and Ukrainian Adoption (FRUA) Including Neighboring Countries (INC). At this summer’s national board meeting, Sue announced her decision not to return to her Chairmanship. Per FRUA’s by-laws, National Vice Chair, Jan Wondra, who has been Acting Chair since December 2012, will continue as Acting Chair until the next scheduled FRUA national board election in June 2014.

Sue has simultaneously managed a high-intensity career as a senior international affairs officer in the Department of Defense (DoD) with her role on the FRUA National Board. In early 2012, Sue began a demanding leadership development program, requiring her to pursue a graduate degree at a DoD educational institution. In June 2013, Sue received a master of science degree in national defense resourcing strategy at National Defense University and was named a Distinguished Graduate. She has begun a six-month assignment in the Department of Energy, where her work focuses on reducing the threat of nuclear weapons proliferation. Upon completion of this assignment, Sue expects to move into an even more demanding leadership role in the federal government. Sue is keenly aware that FRUA and the National Board require active, dedicated attention to ensure the organization continues to provide hope, help and community for adoptive families. The demands of her career, combined with the needs of her family, make her unable to devote the necessary time to her FRUA obligations. “Stepping down from the National Board after nearly a decade of service is one of the most difficult decisions I have ever made. But it is the right decision for me, my family, and for FRUA,” she says. “Jan has done a fantastic job leading FRUA during my sabbatical, and I know her talents are the right fit to lead FRUA to continued success in these turbulent times for international adoption.”

“Jan Wondra has served on the national board since July 2005, first as Regional Liaison and, for the past three years, as National Vice Chair,” says Gainor. “She has been involved in FRUA since its beginnings in 1994, helping to found the FRUA-Wisconsin chapter and founding FRUA-Colorado. In her capacity as Vice Chair, Jan has handled all FRUA technology and communications, as well as special projects. As part of her duties, Jan has served as FRUA’s liaison to the Department of State's Office of Children's Issues since 2009.”

Since Russia's December 2012 ban on adoption by Americans, Jan has stepped up FRUA's policy presence in Washington DC, meeting with the State Department, the ambassadors of several foreign governments, the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute, and many other national-level adoption policy groups. Her career as a marketing vice president and brand strategist has focused on global brands, from packaged goods, to financial services, technology, telecoms, and public utilities. “Her experience will serve us well as FRUA considers how to evolve to meet the demands of changing times,” adds retiring Chair, Gainor.

“The FRUA board will continue to focus on FRUA’s mission, providing resources, community, and advocacy on behalf of adoptive families and members,” states Wondra. “I appreciate the support of the National Board and ask for the support of our chapter leadership and membership during this transition and beyond. I'll do my best to move FRUA forward in a changing environment. FRUA is not loosing Sue's wisdom and experience; she has agreed to join the FRUA Advisory Board.”

As we share this news with our membership world-wide, we return again to this truth; that Together we are making a difference in the lives of adopted children and together we are living out FRUA's promise of hope, help and community for adoptive families. You will be hearing more from FRUA National in the coming weeks as FRUA kicks off a fall membership drive with a new educational partner. In the meantime, have a wonderful back-to-school season!

Our warmest regards,
