Hundreds of thousands of children remain in orphanages and "baby, or social, homes" throughout Eastern Europe and Central Asia. FRUA is dedicated to providing support to these children still residing in state care and waiting to be placed in forever homes.
FRUA's Young Adults have expressed interest in leading FRUA orphan support activities going forward as a way to give back to their birth countries and orphans who will not be raised in a family. Working together towards a shared goal can also build meaningful cohesion among this wonderful group. As this transfer of responsibility within FRUA is fresh, we eagerly await plans by our young adults and their mentor to continue FRUA's work to give back.
Orphan Support Funding
Orphan support funds are donated to FRUA INC by members, friends, families, and other non-profit organizations. FRUA children have also contributed money raised at birthday parties, through school fund raisers, and through chapter-organized donation collections like Pennies for Playgrounds, garage sales, silent auctions, and even a photographic orphan support effort called "The Orphans of Belarus." Extended family members and friends have remembered orphans in their wills and bequeathed funds to FRUA to use toward orphan support.
FRUA's National Grant Program
FRUA has provided grants to non-profits offering assistance and support to orphans in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Working with diverse organizations such as the Peace Corps, American Academy of Family Physicians through Physicians with Heart, Titus International, and others, FRUA has partially or fully funded physical improvements to orphanages in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Bulgaria, Republic of Georgia, Republic of Moldova, Kyrgyzstan, Poland, and Tajikistan. These much-needed improvements include repairing bathrooms, replacing windows, installing washing machines, boilers, refrigerators, etc.
FRUA has also organized orphan support projects directly, including playground builds. To date, FRUA has installed 17 therapeutic playgrounds in Romanian and Russian orphanages. This involved purchasing appropriate therapeutic playground equipment, shipping it to a recipient orphanage, and funding its installation.
Matching Grant Program
The FRUA Matching Grant Program provides matching funds, up to $500 per project (limited to $1000/year/chapter), to interested FRUA regions to assist their orphan support efforts.
